Fact sheet

The Dutch Postcode Lottery and its beneficiary The Climate Group host today’s international meeting which we believe will support the necessary historic global move on climate change: Blair on Climate Solutions.

Today former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Dutch Minister of European Affairs Frans Timmermans and leading low-carbon innovators will discuss how to put the world on track to rescue the climate.

Climate change caused by global warming presents one of the world’s greatest challenges. Solving it requires applying low carbon technologies at scale, supported by new financing and business models. Numerous ways of cutting greenhouse-gas emissions exist, and many are already being implemented. But to make the difference, we must step up the pace.

Mr Blair will outline how innovation is helping to fight climate change, and what more must be done. Leaders in the fields of wind energy, solar power, LED lighting and electric vehicles will highlight what they need from governments, investors and the public to further low-carbon technology development. These growing industries send a clear message to policy makers that it is possible to break the deadlock and secure a fair and effective international climate deal in Copenhagen.

In late 2007, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair approached The Climate Group to support his Breaking the Climate Deadlock initiative. The project strives to build high-level political and business support for an ambitious post-2012 climate change agreement. The project builds on Mr Blair’s international climate change leadership while in office. The Climate Group, through its core network of members and partners, facilitates research and engagement with key global experts in industry, academia and government. A distinguished group of international climate change experts provide technical, policy and scientific advice to the project.

The Breaking the Climate Deadlock initiative works to directly support the UN climate change negotiations. It aims to build decisive political support among the key players - US, EU, China, India, Japan and Russia - for a new international agreement on climate change and for the strategies for its subsequent implementation that will result in greenhouse gas emission reductions consistent with those advocated by the scientific community.
